The Kyoto Protocol (KP) adopted at the third session of the UNFCCC convention held in Kyoto, Japan, in December, 1997 gave way to acceptance of emission reductions initiatives.
The KYOTO PROTOCOL defines greenhouse gases and sets a target for countries to reduce the emission of these greenhouse gases. The projects that reduce the emission of these gases are known as Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects.

It is an agreement negotiated as an amendment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which was adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. All parties to the UNFCCC can sign or ratify the Kyoto Protocol, while non-parties to the UNFCCC cannot. The Kyoto Protocol was adopted at the third session of the Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC (COP3) in 1997 in Kyoto, Japan.
Most provisions of the Kyoto Protocol apply to developed countries, listed in Annex I to the UNFCCC. Emission figures exclude international aviation and shipping.
Vallibel Power Erathna PLC is pleased that its power plant is contributing to emission reduction in a significant way. The entire output of the power plant is sold to the national utility company (Ceylon Electricity Board) and as a result, the utility company does not have to purchase or produce energy from thermal sources equivalent to the generation capacity of our power plant. Thus, each unit generated by our power plant will result in reduction of emission of CO2. |
