The Denawaka Ganga Small hydro power project is located at Durekkanda, 9 km away from Rathnapura town in the Rathnapura Divisional secretariat in the district of Rathnapura. The plant is 'Run of The River' type and utilizes the water flow of Denawaka Ganga which is a main tributary of the Kalu Ganga.
The water catchment area of the project is estimated to be 218 square kilometers in extent. The project design flow is 25 m3/s and the gross head is 34 meters. Plant capacity is 7.2 MW and annual energy generation is estimated to be 25 GWh. Estimated Project cost is Rs. 1085 million.
The Project is to be commissioned by end of January 2012.
