The Kiriwaneliya Project utilizes the hydro potential of the Maskeli Oya and the flow of several other feeder streams, approximately 5km downstream of the Canyon Pond. The Project is located just below the Laxapana water falls in the Ginigathhena Divisional Secretariat Division of the Nuwaraeliya District. The power house site can be reached from the Norton-Bridge-Maskeliya main road.
The installed capacity of the project will be 4.65 MW, with a potential for generating approximately 16 GwH of energy annually, which will be fed to the national grid at 33kV voltage level.
The total area of catchment is about 15 square kilometers which is entirely located in the wet zone and receives consistently high annual rainfall exceeding 4800 mm/year. The catchment area receives rainfall mainly from the southwest monsoon (May-October) and 25 years flow data reveal that the project will have 40% plant factor for the design flow of 3 m3/s.
The project started its commercial operations on 15th December 2011.
