Mr. Gunaratne studied at St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia and served as a member of the Western Provincial Council from 1989 to 2009.

Mr. Gunaratne has held diverse leadership positions in both private and public sector organisations. He previously served as the Vice Chairman of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and currently serves as the Chairman of Lanka Hotels and Residencies (Pvt) Ltd, the owners of Sheraton Colombo Hotel.

He also serves on the Boards of Hayleys PLC, Dipped Products PLC, Horana Plantations PLC, Swisstek Ceylon PLC, East West Properties PLC, Hiru Rice Products (Pvt) Ltd, College of Fashion and Design, and SLIIT International (Curtin University Colombo).
